Life in Bahrain – American Mission Hospital

American Mission Hospital

The American Mission Hospital in Bahrain was established in 1903 by Christian missionaries. It is located in the heart of Manama. Behind the hospital is the only evangelical Christian church in Manama, the Bahrain Christian Fellowship. The hospital is one of only two locations where you can find an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. The second location is at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interestingly, behind the church is a chicken farm and a grave yard.

Substance Abuse in Bahrain

Meeting place for AA/NA

While living in Manama, I volunteered at the hospital, working with recovered addicts and alcoholics. The photos show the room where both Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings are held. Follow this link for the address and times of meetings. Substance abuse, especially narcotics abuse, is rampant in both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Chicken Farm

From one of the windows of this room, you can see the chicken/duck farm right outside. The people living in these apartments also work at the hospital, reportedly preparing cadavers for burial.

Grave Yard

This photo was taken from the roof of the hospital showing the vast grave yard behind the hospital.

Bahrain Christian Fellowship

This final photo shows the Bahrain Christian Fellowship hall. On Thursday and Friday evenings, this church is packed with believers. It is a very lively, spirit filled fellowship.
